How to Choose the Right Wood Pallet for Your Texas Operation

Texas businesses buying pallets for the first time — or re-evaluating their current supplier — often face the same confusion: the pallet market uses inconsistent terminology, grade standards vary between suppliers, and pricing varies enormously based on grade, quantity, and timing. VP Trading Company has been helping South Texas businesses navigate these choices since 2016.

This guide covers the key decisions every Texas pallet buyer needs to make: size, grade, treatment, and volume — and explains what each choice means for your operations and your budget.

Step 1 — Choose Your Pallet Size

  • GMA Standard (48×40 inches) — Used by over 90% of U.S. industrial, retail, and distribution operations. Fits all standard forklifts, pallet jacks, and racking. If you have no specific size constraint, this is your pallet.
  • Custom Dimensions — Required when your product footprint, racking system, or customer specification doesn't fit a GMA pallet. We manufacture custom pallets to virtually any dimension at our Edinburg facility.
  • Block vs. Stringer Construction — Block pallets (9-block design) offer true 4-way forklift entry. Stringer pallets are more common in Texas and cost less, with 2-way or notched 4-way entry. Most Texas warehouses use stringer pallets.

Step 2 — Choose Your Pallet Grade

  • New Pallets — Fresh-cut lumber, no repair history, uniform boards. Best for food-grade, pharmaceutical, high-weight, or appearance-critical applications. Highest cost.
  • Grade A Recycled — Fully repaired, all boards structurally sound, inspected before sale. Performs like new for most applications at 30–50% lower cost. Best value for most Texas warehouse and distribution operations.
  • Grade B / Combo — Mixed-condition boards, functionally sound, cosmetically imperfect. Best for one-way outbound shipping where the pallet will not return. Lowest cost option.

Step 3 — Decide on Heat Treatment

  • Standard (Non-HT) Pallets — For all domestic U.S. shipping and storage. No special certification needed.
  • Heat Treated (HT) Pallets — Required for international export to most countries under ISPM-15. The IPPC HT stamp on the pallet certifies compliance. Do NOT ship internationally on non-HT pallets — customs rejection costs far exceed the HT premium.

Step 4 — Calculate Your Volume and Set Up Supply

Pallet pricing drops significantly with volume — the per-unit price for 500 pallets can be 20–40% lower than for 50 pallets. Understanding your actual monthly pallet consumption allows us to structure a supply program with scheduled deliveries, volume pricing, and inventory management that reduces your per-pallet cost while ensuring you never run short.

VP Trading Company works with Texas businesses on both spot orders (one-time or irregular purchases) and ongoing supply programs (regular scheduled deliveries at contracted pricing). Contact us to discuss which model fits your operation.
